Global Television to join Seven Network at Redfern

Australia’s largest
independent facilitator of broadcast television, Global Television, is to
establish a major new production facility at the Australian Technology
Park in Redfern.

Global Television produces popular shows such as Australian
Idol, Dancing with the Stars and Hi-5.

The NSW Planning Minister and Minister for Redfern-Waterloo,
Frank Sartor, made the announcement
when he and Member for Heffron, Kristina Keneally,
turned the first sod of soil on construction of the $123 million Seven Network
development at the ATP.

Chris McMillan, CEO of Global Television, said, “This is a
$60 million commitment and we are excited to be part of Australia’s largest dedicated
television production facility and the growth potential that it represents.”

“This complex will create great synergies in television
production. It will be fantastic for our clients allowing us to distribute
their content across all platforms from traditional terrestrial distribution to
streaming via internet and the 3G network,” Mr McMillan said.

120 staff will be based at Global’s new 10,000 m2 Redfern
production house with up to 500 freelance staff working on studio projects at
various times.

Minister Frank Sartor
said that Global Television’s decision to join the Seven Network and Pacific
Magazines at the ATP will turn Redfern into “one of Australia’s most dynamic media
centres.”

“These new production studios and commercial offices are
expected to establish 2000 permanent jobs in Redfern and create up to 600
construction jobs, including 60 for Indigenous workers,” Mr Sartor said.

Heffron MP Kristina Keneally
welcomed the start of construction of the media hub and said that it will
“provide an important boost to the local economy and generate important job
opportunities.”

“This is a significant step towards the transformation of
the ATP from disused railway workshops into a world-class technology and
business centre,” she said.

The media hub is expected to become operational in late 2009
when the Seven Network and Global Television complete their move to Redfern.

Eveleigh community markets approved

The proposed community markets to operate from the heritage
Blacksmith’s Workshop at North Eveleigh have
recently received development consent.

This followed a public re-exhibition of the proposal after
operating hours were amended from the original development application. Works
on the RWA’s $3 million refurbishment of the heritage building will now
commence in the first part of 2008 and the aim is for a spring opening in
September.

This exciting proposal for a fresh food and produce market
has attracted widespread community interest and is expected to be a local
employment generator.

Arts and crafts will also be a feature of the new facility.
109 undercover stalls are proposed for the community market, which is likely to
commence operations on weekends only.

Redfern to be learning centre

Photo: MARKET ON THE MOVE: In the past three years more than
$600 million has been earmarked for Redfern-Waterloo’s urban renewal. This is
expected to increase to more than $1 billion by the end of 2008. The State
Government will have facilitated most of this current and future investment.

Redfern has taken a
major step towards becoming a significant learning centre with a multi-million
dollar investment by Group Colleges Australia (GCA) to occupy ten

levels of the former TNT Tower
building in Lawson Square.

About one thousand students from Metro
English College,
St James College and Central
College will attend
classes from March 2008 in new, purpose built educational facilities, which
will also be available for use by other affiliated GCA colleges. Over one
hundred teaching and administrative staff will work at the centre which will
operate Monday to Friday from 8am to 9pm.

GCA Managing Director Alan Manly said he was excited by the
relocation to Redfern, which he sees as an area moving ahead with landmark
developments like the Seven Network/Pacific Magazines and Global Television
media hub at the Australian
Technology Park.

“This is a longer-term commitment by GCA and we are very
confident about Redfern’s future,” he said.

The large influx of staff and students to the building
recently vacated by the City of Sydney
will also be a welcome boost for traders in Regent and Redfern Streets.

Sydney Festival at Eveleigh’s Carriageworks

The internationally acclaimed Sydney Festival returns with
two exciting shows at North Eveleigh’s CarriageWorks performance space in January 2008.

The RWA-owned
Australian Technology
Park is promoting the
cultural renaissance at CarriageWorks
with $125,000 in sponsorship support to the Festival over four years.

The National Theatre of Scotland will perform Black Watch at CarriageWorks
Bay 17 from January 10-26. Described as “one of the clearest artistic
statements yet on the futility of war”, Black Watch will be performed at 8pm on
Monday to Friday and at 2pm and 8pm on Saturday.

The second show Aalst
has been described by Variety as containing “performances of towering,
heartbreaking power”.

The National Theatre of Scotland doubles up in this
co-production with Victoria, Belgium and Tramway, Glasgow.

Aalst will be
performed at 8pm each night between January 18 – 23 at CarriageWorks
Bay 20.

Seniors Christmas Party

A festive time was
had by all as nearly 300 senior residents from the local community kicked up
their heels at the Redfern Waterloo Authority’s third annual Christmas Luncheon
held recently at the Australian Technology Park. The RWA provided bus transport
to enable many seniors to attend.

This year’s entertainment at the free event was kicked off
by a three piece choir who provided beautiful renditions of some old-time
favourite carols, followed by a knock ‘em down return performance by the
acclaimed Latin American dance troupe, Groupo
Voluntad.

An abundance of good food and prizes helped complement a
wonderful day out for those attending what has quickly become a fixture on the
seniors’ social calendar.
