THE Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) has had its application
approved for affordable housing support from the National Rental
Affordability Scheme.

The Pemulwuy Project will receive 62 new affordable rental
properties. The scheme allows builders a subsidy each year, for 10
years, on the condition that accommodation is rented out at 25 per cent
below the market rate.

Federal Member for Sydney Tanya Plibersek met with the Aboriginal
Housing Company following the success of its application. In addition to
the Pemulwuy Project, the biggest one to benefit from the NRAS will be
the Frasers site on Broadway.

“Pemulwuy will be getting 62 dwellings in the AHC’s redevelopment of The Block,” Ms Plibersek said.

“Glebe and Zetland will be getting 83 dwellings through City West
Housing, and the really big one is going to the Frasers site in Broadway
which will provide 828 properties.”

Unlike public housing, rental properties under the NRAS can be utilised by people who have a higher income.

“Low and middle income earners can apply, but the income cut-off is
not the same for public housing; you can earn more money and still be
eligible and we did that deliberately because we are particularly
targeting lower paid workers so there are about a million people in
Australia who are eligible in terms of income cut offs. It also depends
if you are single, partnered, if you have kids etc,” Ms Plibersek said.

She said that this housing will be of great benefit to residents who work in the city.

“We have a very high rental population in Sydney and with people
moving around all the time it means that they can afford to stay more
easily in suburbs like Chippendale,” she said.

“It’s also very good news for students who want to go to UTS or
Sydney University, it might make it easier to be living close by”.
