The Lift Redfern campaign wants lifts Installed
to ensure busy Redfern station becomes Easy Access compliant.
It launched a petition today that aims to
collect 10.000 signatures demanding the installation of lifts.
Premier Barry O’Farrell has previously promised
any petition signed by more than 10.000 people would be debated in the State
Parliament.
With 50.000 commuters passing through every day,
Redfern station is the second busiest interchange station and has the seventh
most used entrances and exits, according to campaigner Joel Pringle.
“Yet people with disabilities, older
people, parents with young children, pregnant women, people with short-term
mobility issues and people with luggage or shopping have great difficulty in
accessing or cannot access the station at all,” he said.
Redfern station does not have a lift or ramps
to platforms, nor does it have wheelchair accessible toilets or car spaces.
The campaign counts Sydney MP Clover Moore, the
University of Sydney, the South Sydney Business Chamber and severed community
groups among Its supporters.
Transport for NSW told mX today a review of the Easy Access
program was under way to “determine the future program for station upgrades”.
