Skate shoes
and black jeans flew left and right on the ramps, steps and railings that have
been designed to mimic the slopes and fats of Martin Place and St Mary’s Cathedral Square.
At the
opening the Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, said, “We couldn’t give you a museum or a
cathedral, but we are proud of what we have given. This skate park caters for
beginners and experienced skate boarders alike, and will provide a great
opportunity for activity for locals.”
Five street
artists were invited by the council to add an artistic element to the slopes
and steps at Fernside. In a consultative process with local youth, the City,
and South Sydney Community Services, a variety of street-art techniques were
utilised, said street artist Wendy Murray. “At the moment there is a
combination of free-style and stencil art at Fernside. We will be designing and
painting additional art in the coming months to finish off the park.”
Local
skater Jamie Hawley said the park is designed to allow both profcient and
inexperienced skaters the opportunity to use the facility. “Skate park designs
are usually old-school, this time it has been done by street skaters. It is the
best park I’ve seen for a while. This one has got hubbers, stairs, rails, and
bowls, and allows for a good fow. What’s important is that it gives everyone a
go.”
