On the afternoon of
16th April, signs were erected on the fronts of the houses defining a site
boundary. The Kensington Cottages are Brewery workers cottages, circa 1850.
They are identified in CUBs’ heritage assessment as significant.
There are four
houses tenanted in Kensington
Street. The others have been left to decay by CUB
as tenants have died or left. Eight people reside in the four households. The
periods of tenancy range from eight to eighteen years. The residents who have
been preserving and protecting the houses for more than a decade want to know
why vacant possession of the houses is required so urgently and so early in the
redevelopment plan? The residents are saying that apparently the Council cannot
provide info as there is no DA. Next month we will have a full report from Kensington Street.
