There was an outcry at the time and promises of reform. Lots
of good things started to happen. Then came the tragedy of TJ Hickey’s death,
the subsequent riots and again promises that Redfern Police would do better.
Last month a Sydney
paper reported that South’s CEO Peter Holmes a Court had made a complaint to
the police. The complaint came after police stopped Souths players Dean Widders
and Jeremy Smith for no reason.
“They were pulled over by the police outside Erskineville Oval
– our training ground – for no real reason,” Rabbitohs’ co-owner Peter Holmes a
Court was quoted as saying. “They were asked to get out of the car. They asked
why… The players were understandably upset at their treatment – pulled up
only for their skin colour and for where they were.” Peter sought and received
assurances that police would stop intimidating dealings with members of the
Aboriginal community. Peter shouldn’t get too hopeful. I’m sure the inner city
Aboriginal community has heard all the promises before.
