Cr Harris said the presence of a Green on the council had
resulted in great changes during the past four years and that two
representatives of the party could only achieve more.
He said Greens initiatives at the council had seen the
introduction of a disability access officer and committee, produced a
car-sharing trial that is soon to be expanded to 90 vehicles, and introduced an
amendment making Sydney Council use 100 per cent green energy.
Cr Harris said in the coming term he would “look at
every single thing that we can do to reduce our emissions and to make the
council greener”.
One initiative is for local councils to purchase and build a
solar thermal plan for the city, rather than the gas-fired generation favoured
under
the council’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan. “(2030) is
full of unachievable things that council can’t control and her solution for
energy involves burning fossil fuels, which is exactly the problem we have
now,” he said.
Ms Doutney said concern about development and the treatment
of the city’s most vulnerable were behind her decision to run for council.
