The RWA has placed The Eveleigh Railway Workshops Draft
Interpretation Plan and Implementation Strategy on exhibition on their website at www.redfernwaterloo.nsw.gov.au/community_consultation/heritage.htm.
This is an important proposal from the Redfern Waterloo Heritage Taskforce and
Eveleigh Steering Committee processes.
A Eveleigh Heritage Interpretation Strategy was a key
concern of heritage groups in 2008 when they asked Minister Keneally to
establish the Taskforce.
The site needs an overall Heritage Interpretation Plan
that helps people in the future to understand the whole site and how it worked.
This is important because the former Railyards will have a number of different
owners.
With the winding up of the RWA which has facilitated
the Redfern Waterloo Heritage Taskforce process there will be no overall government
co-ordinating body. One of the unresolved questions is how to ensure ongoing
co-ordination of heritage initiatives across the site following the RWA windup.
The Eveleigh
Heritage Interpretation Strategy provides a starting point to ensure there is
an integrated interpretation strategy across the former rail yards. How ongoing
coordination, promotion and development of the heritage potential highlighted
in the strategy is achieved remains to be determined.
