Very sadly John
McIntyre passed away last Friday after a sudden, short, unexpected illness. Rev
John McIntyre was the Rector of the South Sydney Parish at St Saviours Anglican
Church from 1990 until he moved to Victoria to become the Bishop of Sale in
early 2006. John was very active in the issues and organisations of the area.
He was a community representative on the Redfern Neighbourhood Advisory Board
which he chaired until his move to Victoria. He was also Chair of the Factory
Community Centre and active in the Inner Sydney Regional Council for Social
Development. He was active in his support of the Aboriginal Community and
returned to Redfern a number of times, including to participate in the 2006
Candle Light Vigil in support of Aboriginal Housing on the Block. John was also
active on issues of women’s and gay rights within the Anglican Church.
The Anglican
Primate Phillip Aspinall has advised that “At his family’s request, and so that
his elderly parents can be present along with many of John’s former
parishioners at Redfern, the funeral for Bishop John McIntyre will be at St
Saviour’s, Redfern, at 11 am on Tuesday June 17. It will be followed by a
private cremation at 3 pm. A Memorial Eucharist, at which it is hoped fellow
bishops and other church leaders may be able to be present to celebrate Bishop
John’s life and ministry, will be held on Friday June 20 at 1 p.m. at St Paul’s
Cathedral, Sale.” John is survived by his wife Jan and three children, Jessica,
Paul and Lisa, and parents Ken and Vicky.
Please let others know who may have known or
worked with John who may be interested in attending the service.
