Important Update for Waterloo and Redfern

15 February 2019

Dear Resident

Protecting our Waterloo Communities

I
know many people are deeply concerned about the NSW Government’s plans
for the redevelopment of the Waterloo Housing Estate and the Waterloo
Metro Development.

The City of Sydney opposes their proposals because of the major impacts they will have on residents and surrounding areas.

The
size and scale of what the government is proposing is unprecedented in
Australia as the plan is to increase the current 2,012 homes on the site
to 6,800 homes including 17 towers up to 40 storeys high.

And of the 4,788 additional homes – only an extra 28 will be social housing and 340 affordable housing.

Just
next door to the Estate is the Waterloo Metro development which
includes another 700 apartments in three towers up to 25, 27 and 29
storeys. Only 70 of those will be social housing and 35 affordable
housing.

Both developments will add 4,300 extra vehicles to the area.

UrbanGrowth
is refusing to look at the combined impacts of both proposals and to
give people a true picture of what they are really planning.

The City
is holding a public meeting on Wednesday 6 March at Alexandria Town
Hall, from 6.00pm – 7:30pm to better inform you about what is going on
and to share our response and an alternative proposal for the site being
developed by our expert planning staff.

We value better public
spaces that enjoy access to sunlight, more reasonable densities that
will integrate with the surrounding area and less disruption to the
existing community.

We want to discuss our response and proposal with
you – the people who live and work in the area – so that we can
finalise our response and preferred submission to Government.

I encourage you to attend the meeting and to help us save Waterloo!

Yours sincerely
