Under the sweeping plans, East Darling Harbour will be
transformed, with the creation of an 11-hectare park comparable to
Hyde Park, the opening up of 1.4 kilometres of foreshore to the
public and the creation of 233,000 square metres of office
space.
The $2.5 billion revamp of the 22-hectare former container
terminal is expected to take 12 years, starting next year, and
create 15,000 permanent jobs.
Planning Minister Frank Sartor said the $800 million
redevelopment of the old Carlton and United Breweries site at
Chippendale had also been confirmed.
This plan will create homes for 2800 people, a 6500 square metre
public area, and office space for 4800 workers.
Twenty-nine of the site’s historic buildings will be
preserved.
Mr Sartor said the projects will create “two new gateways to the
city”.
