A ceremony was arranged by representatives of the Redfern
Aboriginal community, Paul Coe (Tent Embassy Movement), Michael
Mundine (Aboriginal Housing Company) and Beryl Van Oploo (Yaama Dhiyaan
Hospitality Training
College) at the Carriageworks, Darlington on Tuesday November 22.
Ideas for the adaptive reuse of the heritage listed
Gardener’s Lodge and environs, prepared by Sydney
University architecture students, were
displayed for a gathering including City Council representatives, heritage
architects, Eora Tafe
College, Sydney University
staff and students, local residents and kids, local MP Tanya Plibersek, and the
Governor of NSW.
After discussion with students involved and a wonderful
commentary by the Governor, the guests had a taste of things to come with Aunty
Beryl’s damper and tea. Empowered by the
enthusiastic reception, University representatives will prepare a full
submission for discussion with local community and Council early next year.
