I am a reader of Central and also a resident artist at CarriageWorks. It is
truly an amazing place. So many good things have happened
there over the last year and into this year. Performance Space have a new home,
contemporary performance and art are alive and flourishing. CarriageWorks has hosted great events such as Sydney
Festival’s 2007 and 2008 programming.
Underbelly, supported and hosted by CarriageWorks,
was the single most important moment in the 2007 Sydney arts calendar. Over 100 young and
emerging artists were given the opportunity to go into the vastness and
recesses of CarriageWorks and create
their work, which culminated in an event that thousands of people attended.
As a resident artist and company I have to say that without
Carriage-Works we would not have flourished in the way that we have. We now
have a solid base and people know we are here. We have work going overseas as
well as a very healthy national profile. Yet we receive no government
assistance to subsidise our residency. Our rent for offices, workshop,
rehearsal spaces and additional workshop
space is paid for at a commercial rate and is generated from
the work the company does, not from state or federal arts funds.
I urge anybody who hasn’t been to CarriageWorks
to see one of the shows there this year just so that they can see an exciting
space that has limitless potential.
