As the first team from the South Sydney district to ever
play in this prestigious tournament the pressure was on from the start to not
only represent our club, but to represent the whole district as the pioneers of
masters football from the SSJRLFC district.
The team finished with three wins from its five games with a
healthy for and against tally of 145 for and only 36 against; both are new
masters records for points scored and conceded.
The team played against Jamberoo, Hibiscus Coast (NZ),
Blacktown Workers, North Queensland and the
Gold Coast.
The team was officially dubbed “The Entertainers” by fellow
teams as the football at times was breath-taking. The game against Blacktown and the Gold
Coast saw us score a staggering 15 tries and only one against.
The prestigious players’ player award – “The Phillip
Tackleberry award” – voted on by the players and the coaching staff, was won
emphatically by Phil Riley who scored an incredible 10 first-place votes
amongst the squad, which summed up the impact he provided throughout the games.
This was a great warm-up for the Sydney Masters tournament
which starts on Saturday 29 with the Rovers taking on the Merryland Rams at
Merryland Oval.
