A draft model is now on public display in the form a
miniature bronze sculpture at Customs House.
The sculpture, by Anthony Symonds, is an initiative of the
Colour Diggers Project and members of the Redfern community. It aims to recognise
and respect the contribution of Indigenous servicemen and women who have fought
in every war Australia
has been involved in since federation.
During the four-week exhibition at Customs House, members of
the public are encouraged to make suggestions on how this contribution could be
permanently recognised in Sydney.
This will include comments on the appropriate design for a
statue recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait
servicemen and women and the way in which public art, plaques and memorials
could be used. The City of Sydney
Council is also working with members of the Coloured
Diggers Project to create an oral history project to record stories of these
servicemen and women, their children and families.
The sculpture is on exhibit until the end of May on Level
One of Customs House, Circular Quay.
