Premier Morris lemma and Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP announced the plan last week, when
Cr Moore and Housing Minister Matt Brown signed a Memorandum of Understanding
that committed the city and the government to developing a 3.6 hectare site in
Glebe.
Part of the land, the 20,000 sqm Bay St Depot Site, is owned by
Sydney Council, which has donated it for the project.
Adjacent is a 16,000 sqm block of land owned by the State
Government and currently home to 130 public housing tenants, who will be given
homes in the new development.
The project will be partially funded by private housing
sales, which will be at below market prices and take up to five years to
complete. The 700 housing units will include private and
public housing and will be particularly aimed at essential
workers, such as cleaners, police officers, transport workers and nurses, whose
jobs are in the city but who are unable to afford to live nearby.
Mr lemma said the new housing would “ease the pressure
on families and battlers getting their first homes.”
Cr Moore said that the project would help implement the
city’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan.
“The city is very excited as it will provide a mix of
housing,” she said.
“It could be a model for other local government
areas.”
Local MP Verity Firth
said she was happy that the housing plan included “sustainable vision”
and that she hoped it would attract “the workers we need and
families.”
“We hope it will create a honey pot effect,” she
said.
