The magazine
includes articles and artworks on Australian-Russian issues, with a particular
focus on cultural and political life. There are plans to develop and present
content in Russian and in English.
Australian Mosaic was established by Tatiana Torlina (who remains
editor) and her husband Vladimir seven years ago.
On May 4 a
special event, comprising acknowledgement of magazine contributors (and
designer Yana Madorski), story-telling and a variety concert, was held at the Redfern Town Hall to mark the publication of the
magazine’s 13th issue. The event was made possible thanks to a grant from the
City of Sydney.
In attendance
were many members of Sydney’s
Russian community, as well as local and Indigenous representatives including Dr
Naomi Mayers of the AMS.
Indigenous
artist Shireen Malamoo joined with Russian composer and guitar player Edward
Kremen for a soulful rendition of ‘Summertime’. The duo performed several songs
again later in the evening. Natasha Morozof, a professional singer from Moscow, sang national
anthems ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ in Russian!
Simon Boikov,
talented son of Fr Michael Boikov from the Croydon Russian Orthodox Church,
performed Russian folk songs on accordian.
11-year-old
Katherine Gvozdova, a student at the Tanya
Pearson Classical
Coaching Academy,
delighted the gathering with a traditional Russian folk dance.
“I’m so very
proud to be associated with this magazine,” said Inna Goubina. “It’s a really
talented team, and inspiring. The level at which it works is serious,
comprehensive, not judgemental. It focuses on Australian life, culture, art.”
Referring to a
number of feature articles that explore relationships between Russian and
Indigenous Australian cultures, Ms Goubina said, “The magazine encourages the
best from each culture. There is something good, beautiful in all of us.”
Particular
praise was lavished on the magazine’s editor, Tatiana Torlina. Ms Torlina is
highly regarded among writers and the wider community as someone who
appreciates the humanising potential of quality journalism. A migrant with
limited opportunities, she has dedicated her abilities toward creating a more
hospitable and more respectful cultural space. “It inspires you,” said Ms
Goubina. “It shows you that one kind heart can change the world around.”
