Construction imminent: Redfern’s new community health centre

The $8 million centre is part of a huge upgrade of the
Redfern-Waterloo site.

Mr Vladeta said the RWA’s role in the project is mainly
concerned with the sale of the former Rachel Forster site. The proceeds from
the sell-off will be used in the new community health centre. Supervising the
construction process will be the Department of Planning’s responsibility, he
said.

Another major redevelopment project in the precinct is the
proposed North Eveleigh pedestrian bridge. Mr
Vladeta told The City News that this project has been the “subject of a concept
plan application.”

“It has just been on exhibition and is now with the
Department of Planning for deliberation,” he added.

But Redfern resident Nicola
Mansfield said she is increasingly frustrated with the lack
of community consultation about the redevelopment projects.

“I can’t tell you anything about the community health centre
because I don’t know – they haven’t told us anything,” she said.

She also said visitors at the National Indigenous Development
Centre (NIDC) car park on the eastern end of Cope Street could see directly into the
bedrooms of nearby residents.

“We want to know the exact height of that back fence,” she
said, adding that nearby residents are “massively affected”.

Mc Mansfield said residents near the NIDC have had great
difficulties in being involved in the planning of the site.

However, Mr Vladeta said that community involvement is part
of the RWA’s protocol.

“There has been a good amount of community
consultation,”  he said.
