The Redfern-Waterloo Authority would like to formally
welcome the Hon Brad Hazzard, Minister for Planning and Infrastructure and the
Minister assisting the Premier on Infrastructure in NSW to the Redfern-Waterloo
area. The Minister has the responsibility for the Redfern-Waterloo Authority Act so is therefore responsible for the
NSW Government’s involvement in this area.

The Minister has been closely involved in the
Redfern-Waterloo area as the Shadow Minister for Planning and Shadow Minister
for Redfern-Waterloo, so has a detailed knowledge of the many facets that make
up this vibrant and diverse community.

The Redfern-Waterloo Authority wishes the Minister well in
his new role and is looking forward to continuing the positive developments in
the area.

Redfern shop front improvement matching grant
program

Local shops in the Redfern area may be eligible for a
grant to improve their shopfront with the Redfern-Waterloo Authority matching
the City of Sydney grants program to encourage more business in the area. The
objective of the grant is to encourage the removal of roller shutters to
improve a sense of safety and economic activity as well as to let the wider
community know that Redfern is open for business.

Matched grants of up to $3,000 will be considered for this
program, however, applicants must make a matched contribution of cash only, not
a value-in-kind, to the project. The
property must be located on Redfern Street between Elizabeth and Regent
Streets, Regent Street between Cleveland Street and Henderson Road, Cope
Street between Redfern and Turner Streets or Abercrombie Street between Ivy and
Butlin Streets.

Uniting the community through sport

The Australian Technology Park (ATP), South Sydney
Rabbitohs and the NSWRL joined forces to showcase Rugby League and the way the
game can bring harmony into the community with the U17’s ATP Redfern Nines
(9’s) competition held on Saturday, 7 May.
The U17’s ATP Redfern Nines featured more than 200 junior players competing in
heritage-based sides including Indigenous, Maori, Samoan, Fijian and Middle
Eastern. The NSW Maoris won the grand final against the Middle Eastern team,
however, there was plenty of entertainment off the field too with the teams
entertaining the crowd with traditional war dances and cultural performances,
Redfern’s Got Talent, food stalls representing various cultures and a jumping
castle for the kids.

Artists rev up at Eveleigh Artisans’ Market for
charity car rally

More than 120
teams are taking part in an epic road trip to raise funds for cancer research
as part of the second annual Sh*tbox Rally, an extreme fundraiser where
participants will venture from Brisbane to Darwin over seven days in a car
worth less than $1000.

As part of the fundraiser, a group of local artists
visited Eveleigh Artisans’ Market on Sunday, 1 May to join some of the
fundraisers to paint their cars before they set off on their adventure on
Saturday, 21 May to raise vital funds for Cancer Council’s programs. Artisans’
Market shoppers were given the opportunity to see the artists’ at work while
enjoying a coffee and perusing the Artisans’ Market that showcases independent
art, crafts and design.

Eveleigh Market is a community initiative of Australian
Technology Park.

Weave Arts Space opening exhibition

Weave Arts Centre officially launched on Wednesday, 11 May
by holding its inaugural exhibition ‘Breakout’
featuring the work of artists who are recovering from mental health issues.

The exhibition launch was a big success and provided an
opportunity for the artists to sell their art and increase their income above
the poverty line as well as being recognised as accomplished artists. Around
200 people attended the launch – 18 works have been sold so far worth $6,000
with more artwork being commissioned,

The new arts space in North Eveleigh, granted by the
Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority, is run by a professional artist,
Camille Masson-Talansier, and offers an open studio space, classes, workshops
and materials, equipment and opportunities to exhibit and sell work.

Local volunteers recognised

The Community Participation Volunteer Awards 2011 was held
on Thursday, 12 May 2011 to acknowledge the fantastic skills and contributions
of individuals, community groups, and organisations within Redfern, Waterloo
and surrounding suburbs. Held at Alexandria Town Hall, over 150 volunteers were
nominated in recognition for their outstanding contribution to the local
community.

Koori Mail – 20th year celebration

RWA would like to congratulate the Koori Mail for
celebrating its 20^th year anniversary and its 500^th
edition with a special event held at CarriageWorks. RWA”s Yaama Dhiyaan
Hospitality Training School providing hospitality services on the night with 35
Aboriginal trained staff providing catering and waiting services. Over 500
people attended with the event representing the largest number of Aboriginal
Gadigal people being catered for since colonisation.

NCIE celebrates its first anniversary

RWA would like to congratulate the National Centre for
Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) for celebrating its first anniversary in April.
NCIE is located on George St in Redfern and offers state-of-the-art gym and
sporting facilities, workshops, education programs and more.

Modification – Temporary Gardener’s Compound,
Australian Technology Park

The application to extend the use of the Temporary
Gardener’s Compound until 30 April 2016 and the reinstatement of the area until
30 June 2016 was withdrawn by the applicant on 13 April 2011.

New Gardener’s Compound, Australian Technology Park

The application to construct a new Gardener’s Shed
with associated landscaping works on land located between the Central Avenue
roundabout and Henderson Road was likewise withdrawn by the Applicant on 13
April 2011.

Fashion event at the former Clothing Store, North
Eveleigh

The application to use the former Clothing Store Building
at North Eveleigh for a fashion event on 3 May 2011 was approved on 2 May
2011. The application was on exhibition from 15 to 29 April 2011.

New way finding signage, Australian Technology
Park, Eveleigh

A development application was received for the removal of
existing way finding signage and the installation of new way finding signage
throughout the Australian Technology Park public domain. The application
is on exhibition from 11 May to 1 June 2011.

3 June – Tuned in Hip Hop Festival

In celebration of Reconciliation Week and Mabo Day,
the NSW Reconciliation Council is holding a youth hip
hop event on Friday, 3 June at Oxford Art Factory. The
line up boasts some of the best Indigenous and non-Indigenous acts including up
and coming Redfern crew Stunna
Set. Proceeds from the night are going to fund a workshop series for
Indigenous young people in Juvenile Justice Centres. Tickets are $10
