A free suicide prevention workshop for local community organisations and concerned individuals run by Wesley LifeForce. Knowledge with practical strategies: • Knowledge to help identify people at risk and in crisis; • Skills in how to approach a person who is experiencing thoughts of suicide; • How to develop active listening skills; • Learn about intervention strategies in your community. Aims of the workshop: • Learn basic SALT strategy (See Ask Listen Talk) - useful in detecting warning signs, listening and taking appropriate action; • Identification of resources in your local community. Empowering: Enhanced confidence in managing crisis situations.

On Saturday February 13th 2010 there will be a national day of action against the NT Intervention and for Aboriginal rights. This will mark the 2nd anniversary of the Apology to the Stolen Generations. Speakers will include Irene Fisher, Sunrise Health (NT), Pastor Ray Minniecon, Mal Tulloch, CFMEU and Jeff McMullen. Entertainment will be provided by The Black Turtles, Nadeena Dixon and Michael Donovan.
Factory through it HCAP programme will be organising this years 2nd Waterloo Summer on the Green Community Celebration. From the 1st to the 5th of July, the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in Leichhardt will host an inspiring exhibition by artists such as the winners of the 2007 Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award recipients Dennis Nona and Alick Tipoti. Other artists include David Bosun, textile artist Rosie Barkus, Aicey Zaro, Eddie Nona, Lisa Sorbie Martin as well as a display of contemporary artefacts. Selected artists will be on hand throughout the week to talk about their work including a ‘yarn time’ with Nancia Guivarra and Dennis Nona discussing his Telstra award winning sculpture, ‘Ubirikubiri”. Music, dance and story telling sessions are also part of the program.

On the 1st of July every year, Torres Strait Islanders acknowledge the 1871 arrival of Christianity on Erub Island in the Torres Strait. In Sydney this year there will be much more than going to church and feasting. Acknowledging that July One or its Creole equivalent, ‘Zulai 1’ is no longer restricted to celebrating Christianity, the Lagaw Kodo Mir Torres Strait Islander Resource and Culture Centre NSW, with the support of the Australia Council for the Arts, have organised a week long exhibition of high profile Islander artists and performances. The week of festivities will culminate with an Ecumenical service and feasting on Sunday 6th July at the Redfern Town Hall. TIME TO BE CONFIRMED
To help celebrate and educate during Library and Information Week and Reconciliation Week, there is a special Twilight Sidewalk Astronomy event at Waterloo Library. National Park Ranger David Wright will join sidewalk astronomers from Sydney Observatory with a talk on nightskies from a First Nation perspective. It is a great opportunity for you to raise any concerns about you local area and find out about the various projects and developments that are happing. 2-3pm Russian-specific forum, followed by 3pm-5pm an English-speaking forum

Waterloo Landscape Course commences 28th April (running Tuesdays and Wednesdays for ten weeks) This is a free course for Young People, 16-25 years old, who are interested in horticulture in and increasing their opportunity to get work in this area. The course will start on site and be completely hands on. This will attract a lot of participants, so get in early.
The landscape plan has been developed in partnership with the community for the community. This will be your last opportunity to view the proposals and provide any feedback. The proposed upgrades will make Waterloo Green an even better community space for every resident to enjoy. Come and view the landscape plans, enjoy a free BBQ and meet your neighbours. In the event of wet weather the BBQ will be held at 3pm, Friday 22 August.
The above action group is open to all agencies and residents working on projects tackling the above issues. The next meeting will be focusing on forthcoming landscaping projects at PCYC and Cook Community Garden, and other related projects planned for 2010.
For the last two years, the Waterloo NAB has being piloting a new framework of engagement; this was achieved through the establishment of four thematic Action Groups. The time has come to review the progress of this new framework and celebrate the successes, and look at the lessons learnt and plan together for the framework which will take us through the next two years. So we invite all Residents and Agencies to come along and hear the reports of the action groups and help us to set the vision for the coming two years. Lunch provided
