University of Sydney

The University of Sydney abuts the suburb of Darlington. Over the years the University has been buying up the area and consolidating their land holdings. As an example the current Darlington Primary School was built to replace the old Darlington school which was taken over by the University. With proposals in late 2007 to consolidate the University's Abercrombie Street precinct the school will again be surrounded on two sides by the University campus.

This is the leaflet distributed in June 2008 calling for Expressions of Interest from businesses in food, bars, supermarkets, book stores cafes, restaurants etc to become part of Sydney Uni's new Sydney Central. The University describe the building as "Sydney Central building (yet to be formally named) will create a mini city-centre for the Darlington and Camperdown campuses offering vibrant public spaces and retail areas". This is the feedback form from the Sydney University's Draft 2020 Masterplan exhibition for residents on 23rd August 2008. The University is looking for feedback about the relationship between the University and the communities that surround it as well as for feedback on the 2020 Masterplan and how its impact on the surrounding communities might be best managed. The letter below was sent on 24 May 2010 by REDWatch individually to local politicians urging "the state government and Sydney University enter into negotiations to overcome whatever non-financial obstacles exist to the sale of the North Eveleigh site to the University." The letter was sent to Kristina Keneally, Carmel Tebbutt, Ferity Firth, Tanya Plibersek and Clover Moore.

Experts will be on hand to hear your comments and answer your questions. your views are important to us. The site under discussion is bounded by Abercrombie St, Codrington St, Darlington Lane and Darlington School and has Department of Planning Director General's Requirements for development under Part 3A of the EPA.

Sydney University Director of Campus Infrastructure and Services, Colin Rockliff, issued the following update on Sydney University revising their plans for the Abercrombie Street campus on 7 July 2011. The next meeting to discuss these plans between the University and Residents is 9am 19th July at the University Services building.

Sydney University is looking to finalise its plans for the Business School on Abercrombie Street but before finalising the revised project brief, the University is looking for community input at a community information session. Revised plans for the University of Sydney’s new Business School at the Abercrombie Precinct in Darlington have been submitted to the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure. The plans are expected to go on public display on the Department’s website within the next 2 weeks reports this media release from Sydney University.

Sydney Uni has responded to the 2011 Exhibition with a changed proposal which is now on exhibition. The Project Application is to develop a new educational precinct within the site bounded by Abercrombie Street, Codrington Street, Darlington Street and Golden Grove Street. Currently the Department website provides no details of when the proposal goes off exhibition.

The University of Sydney will host a stall at Eveleigh Market on Saturday 22 September from 8 am to 1 pm, when it invites the local community to find out more about its plans to build a world-class business school facility in Darlington.

The Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) handed down its determination on the University of Sydney's Abercrombie Street Business School on 16 November 2012. The PAC made a number of changes to the Departments proposed conditions. The PAC conditions cover the entrance moving from Abercrombie Street and the conditions for the University is to prepare a Darlington Precinct Pedestrian and Bicycle Access Strategy by 30 June 2013 which is to identify works to the value of $2m to be completed prior to the occupation of the Business School.
