North Eveleigh Affordable Housing
Affordable Housing was announced for the North Eveleigh site by Minister Sartor in 2008. The RWA applied for support for affordable housing from the Federal Government Housing Affordability Fund (HAF) in 2010. In April 2012 it was announced that 61 units of affordable housing would be placed with HAF support on the western end of the North Eveleigh site. The SMDA immediately placed on exhibition a Draft Review of Environmental Factors for Early Works and and Infrastructure Works. Expressions of Interest have also been called for from registered Affordable Housing Providers to own and operate the affordable housing.

The SMDA has commenced the process for designing two parks at the western end of the North Eveleigh site. In accordance with the North Eveleigh Concept Plan, an application for the development of the parks must be submitted. This must occur prior or concurrently with the first application for new floor space. A private consultancy firm has been appointed to progress the design and submit this development application. The SMDA will seek to ensure that the community’s interests are incorporated in the design and will be undertaking consultation with the community and stakeholders.
The landscaping and park proposed to the east of the new western entrance to North Eveleigh and Carriageworks has been approved in the road and early works approval. To make the details readily available REDWatch has requested additional details from the SMDA and these are provided below.
Two new parks of 3,350sm and 445sm are being proposed for the Newtown end of the North Eveleigh site. In an area where there is a low proportion of open space per capita it is very important to design these parks so that they meet the needs of those in the surrounding community and those visiting Carriageworks and the Eveleigh Markets. Locals are encouraged to make their thoughts known on what should happen with these parks.
City West Housing (CWH) has been appointed as the affordable housing provider for the North Eveleigh affordable housing project initiated by the RWA now UrbanGrowth Development Corporation. CWH is to undertake the design, seek planning approval, construct and manage a minimum of 61 affordable housing units at North Eveleigh. The final number of units will be determined through the design stage reports Geoff Turnbull in the February 2013 issue of the South Sydney Herald.
The following response for Lord Mayor Clover Moore to issues raised by REDWatch deals with Councils recent involvement with the SMDA / UGDC in preparing a TMAP dealing with the impact of the North Eveleigh development and in exploring Council's role in heritage activities at North Evleigh. The letter dated 15 March 2012 also deals with the Abercrombie Street upgrade.
A community Information session is being held on the new City West Housing residential building proposed adjacent to the Carriageworks building. The plans for the proposed parks on the Newtown end of the site will also be available for inspection.
The City of Sydney has advised that the application for North Eveleigh parks, as described below, is on public exhibition until 6 May 2013.
